Sirene Women's Choir
Got its name from Sirens, the mysterious and enchanting creatures of mythology, Sirene Women’s Choir was established in 2014 under the leadership of Volkan Akkoç. With its young and experienced singers and a repertoire comprising pieces from romantic era to today, Sirene continues its efforts to perform choral music in the best way.
In 2015, Sirene had the chance to work with Michel Laplénie and Sagittarius Vocal Ensemble within the scope of 29th International İzmir Festival and performed the world premiere of Ahmed Adnan Saygun’s “Duyuşlar”. In 2016 took part in Mediterranean Choral Forum, Sirene actively takes part in choral world by participating in numerous concerts and projects.
Meet Our Conductor
Volkan Akkoç started his music education at the age of 6 in İstanbul University State Conservatory and graduated from part-time piano program in 2007. As a pianist in different bands and groups, he participated in various festivals and concerts such as Akbank Jazz Festival. Parallel to his music education, he finished FMV Işık High School and afterwards got his Bachelor’s degree in History from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. During 2009-2010 academic year, he carried out Master of Science studies in İstanbul Technical University (İTÜ) Center for Advanced Studies in Music (MİAM), in the area of Music Theory with his supervisor Dr. Michael Ellison and Adam Roberts.
About choir conducting and vocal training in choirs, he participated in workshops and masterclasses of very important conductors such as Elisenda Carrasco, Volker Hempfling, Hans-Dieter Reinecke, Denes Szabó, Frieder Bernius. He studied orchestral conducting in İTÜ MİAM with Emin Güven Yaşlıçam.
Since 2008 he works as a qualified piano instructor in FMV Nişantaşı Işık High School and since 2012 he has also been working as an instructor in İstanbul University State Conservatory Composition and Orchestral Conducting Department. He conducts the Conservatory’s Undergraduate Students’ Choir and also continues to work with Sirene Women’s Choir as the founding music director and conductor since 2013.
